Ant farms are a classic gift, but there’s a catch most product listings don’t make obvious: most kits don’t come with ants, and the ants you can order don’t include a queen, so the colony won’t last forever. Knowing that up front helps you pick the right kit and keeps a kid from being disappointed.
How live ants work with most kits
Classic kits (like Uncle Milton’s) include a certificate you redeem online to have live harvester ants mailed to you. Things to know:
- Shipping is usually charged separately when you redeem the certificate.
- You get workers only. Suppliers don’t ship queens, so the ants can’t reproduce.
- A worker-only colony typically lives about 1–3 months with good care.
- Shipping to some states and to areas outside the continental US may be restricted. Check before you buy.
- Harvester ants can sting. Adults should handle the transfer.
The three types
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Sand ant farm (classic) | Kids 6+, watching tunnels form, low cost | Workers only; ants live weeks to months |
| Gel ant farm | Looks cool, ants eat and drink from the gel | Gel can mold; ants often don’t live as long as in sand |
| Formicarium (hobby nest) | Older kids/teens who want a real, long-term colony | Needs a queen (caught or bought locally) and more care |

Which one should you buy?
- Ages 6–10, first ant farm: a classic sand farm. Cheap, sturdy, and the tunnel-building is the fun part.
- A desk display for a tween: a gel farm, with the expectation that ants won’t last as long.
- A teen who’s genuinely into it: a formicarium. Ant keeping is a real hobby with an active community.
